Description | Hiroshi Nakamura (then, 13), a second-year student at Fuchu Junior High School in Ashina-gun of the Eastern Prefecture Region, was mobilized to work in the Hiroshima First Engine Depot. Since Hiroshi was feeling ill on August 6 and took the day off from work, he was in the dormitory when the A-bomb detonated. Luckily escaping without injury, he rushed outside when he heard the blast but had to remain motionless for some time as he found himself in complete darkness. By the light of fires burning all around him, he saw the dormitory catching fire. This caused him to run up to his room on the second floor to retrieve the highly prized trunk where he kept all of his possessions. The trunk had been sitting on a desk by the window and had been struck by the heat ray passing through the glass, partially burning it. Hiroshi helped with relief activities throughout August 7 and 8, finally returning home on the night of August 8. |
