Katsunori Mori had been drafted on August 1 and was exposed to the bombing on the 6th. All of his hair fell out and he was permanently bedridden until he passed away on the 31st. He wanted water, but his family had heard that victims must not be given water to drink, and so nobody gave him any. Setsuko says that Katsunori crawled out by himself in the middle of the night to a place where there was water.
His younger brother Mitsuo was exposed to the bombing while helping building demolition as a mobilized student. His family became worried about Mitsuo when he did not return home, and they went in search of him. It was his mother who found Mitsuo, on the 9th. He had passed away still sitting on the stone steps of the Motoyasu Bridge. Setsuko says his mother recognized him as her own child from a bag she had sewn herself, some remnants of his burned clothing, and the mark left over from a swelling on his head.
