Description | Satoko Kitajima (then, 12), a first-year student of First Municipal Girls High School (known as "Ichijo"), was exposed to the bomb at her building demolition work site. From the day after the bombing, her father Isamu (then, 50) and her mother Kiyoko (then, 48) started to search all around for Satoko, asking every student they saw, "Do you know the whereabouts of Kitajima from Ichijo?" Several days later, at her work site where the disposal of corpses had already been initiated, Isamu found Satoko's body. It was one of many bodies burned beyond recognition, but he identified her from the name tag of her clothes, only a part of which was left unburned. Isamu and Kiyoko cremated Satoko's body all by themselves. These are fragments of Satoko's clothes which had been left unburned. Excerpt from the testimony of Satoko's elder brother Hiromi: "After the bombing, my mother came to neither talk much or smile, firmly giving up all entertainment. Disliking pleasures, she wouldn't go on a trip with me even when I asked her to do it for me." |
