Description | Gaiters marked by heat rays Donated by Noboru Fukao Noboru Fukao (then, 31) was an engineer waiting on the platform for his train when the atomic bomb exploded. Assaulted by the intense heat and blast, he suffered severe burns and lost hearing in his left ear due to a ruptured eardrum. Noboru was wearing these gaiters on his legs at the time. His wife, Kimie, had already evacuated to her family home in Yamagata-gun. Worried about her husband and other family members, she went to Hiroshima on August 8 with their eldest son, Hidetaka (then, 21 months), on her back. After discovering that the family was safe, mother and son returned to her family home. However, Hidetaka soon developed a pus-like discharge from his ears and nose, likely caused by the effects of radiation from going into the city so soon after the atomic bombing. He died on September 4. |
