Description Hiroo Taoda (then, 2) was being carried on the back of his mother, Ren (then, 30), as mother and son exited the station building on their way home from visiting his hospitalized father Shigeo. When the atomic bomb exploded, mother and son were assaulted from behind by the heat rays and suffered severe burns. At a first-aid station, Hiroo cried from the pain of the burns and begged for water. However, Ren did not let him drink because she had been told that drinking water would kill him. Hiroo took his last breath at around 11 p.m. that night. Ren never recovered from the guilt of letting her son die and the regret of not letting him have a drink of water at the end. These are the shorts Hiroo was wearing on that day, which Ren kept in memory of her son.
