Description Older brother's trousers
Takaaki Yokoyama (then, 25) experienced the atomic bombing at his home where he received burns. After the bombing, he desperately made his way to the house in Ushita-machi. On August 9, his father, Yasumichi, died and his remaining family members gathered some of their household belongings and set out for Gono Village, Takata County. Incapacitated by the burns, Takaaki pushed himself to walk. Looking up at the night sky full of stars for the first time, he felt relief that they would be free of air raids in the countryside. Shortly after, around August 15 when the end of the war was announced, he came down with a high fever and diarrhea and was unable to eat anything. Shigeru, who had been a medical student at the time, did all he could, but Takaaki died on August 22.

Shigeru Yokoyama recalls:
Looking for ways to care for my older brother, I consulted my textbook, but it said that there was no treatment for his condition. However, we still had some medicine, so I tried to treat him with that, but nothing worked. We placed his body in a casket and I spent the entire day watching the smoke slowly rise from the cremation fire.
