The donor's grandmother, Shizu Iijima, was exposed to the bombing on the second floor of her house. Burned over most of her body, Shizu passed away around 1:30 the following afternoon at a relief station in a suburb. Her son Akira (then, 21) was in the house with her but survived because he had been in a downstairs bathroom. Shizu wore these clothes that day. Akira had carefully preserved them until he died.
