Mr. Hisashi Umeda (13 years old at the time), who was in the second grade at Hiroshima Prefectural Commercial School, was atomic bombed on his way to school with his friends. In the spur of the moment, he placed his boku-zukin (air-raid hood) on his face and crouched, but the flash stuck him on the right and the blast blew him all the way into a nearby house. He and his friends helped each other out and made their way to the river to wash their faces black from burns and dust, and found it full of dead bodies. When he washed his face, his burned skin peeled off of his face. He somehow made it home, and received care from his mother Shizue (32 years old at the time). The wounds were infested with maggots, and the smell was so fetid that Shizue, who had just given birth, passed out. This is the school uniform Hisashi was wearing at the time of the bombing. Just remembering about the A-bomb was very difficult for Mr. Umeda, but he is nonetheless trying to tell his experience so that his wish for peace may be passed down to future generations.
<Excerpt from Hisashi Umeda’s testimony>
When I was atomic bombed, I was right at the center of the tram road. I ducked down, put my air-raid hood on my face, and crouched. The dark world turned completely red and orange. There was a sea of fire, and among the fire, something round like balls were flying to and from, everywhere. Left and right, up and down. It was a sea of fire. The air itself was fire. Everything there was nothing but fire. I didn't even have the luxury to feel heat or pain.
