Description | School uniform Donated by Sachiko Yamane (Shojiro's wife) Approx. 1,300 m from the hypocenter Higashi-hakushima-cho This is a school uniform that Shojiro Yamane (then, 14), a second-year student at Sotoku Junior High School, was wearing on August 6. Shojiro was exposed to the atomic bomb when he was walking to a streetcar stop. He was struck by a flash of light from behind, on his right, and was severely burned on the neck and the back of his hands. His mother Sanae (then, 36) was trapped under a cupboard inside the collapsed house. When Shojiro pulled her out, his younger brother (then, 8) came home from the nearby temple. The three tried to reach an evacuation site. The fire and smoke prevented them from proceeding, so they went to a house of Shojiro's friend. They just wanted a one-night stay. However, Shojiro fell sick and could not move from there. He was on the verge of life and death, but survived and eventually got well again. He kept this uniform with care in his later life. |
