Description | The donor's sister Fumiko Hirokawa, a first-year student at Hiroshima Girls Commercial School, was exposed to the bomb during building demolition work. She was found lying unconscious on the ground on Hijiyama Hill by her father, Wakichi, who had come to look for her. She had sustained serious burn injuries all over her body. Despite her mother Katsuko's attentive care she passed away at home on August 30. Katsuko put the uniform, which was worn by Fumiko at the time of the A-bombing, in the family altar. On the 30th of each month, Katsuko offers Fumiko's favorite confectionery to the altar, stroking the uniform, and weeping, "I'm sorry. It was my fault. It must have been burning hot. I am so sorry." |
