Description | Hatsuko (then 24) was exposed to the A-bomb in her house. Still holding her one-month-old daughter Hiroko, she struggled desperately and managed to crawl out from under their crushed house. Her husband, Katsushige (then 31), had been outside near the house and was badly burned. They found each other in a dry riverbed and fled together to the outskirts of town. Later, while they were staying with Hatsuko's family in Fukuoka, Hiroko fell ill; she died in the morning of September 24. The doctor's diagnosis was "A-bomb disease." This stained and dirty blouse was brand new when Hatsuko put it on that morning. |
