Description Shigezo Kono (then 35) was exposed to the bomb at his workplace, Chugoku Power Distribution Company headquarters (now Chugoku Electric Power Co., Inc.). On the 8th, his older brother found him lying dead, face down beside his desk. He brought home this burnt shirt. Shigezo's wife Toshi (then 29), who had been evacuated, had sewn the shirt herself, so when she saw it she knew her husband was dead. The next day, Toshi headed for Hiroshima carrying their oldest son (then 1). She was advised not to go because of an air-raid warning, but she set forth into the scorched plain, prepared for death.
