Description | Teakettle Donation / Masaaki Sakai Approx. 1,100m from the hypocenter Nobori-cho Masaaki Sakai (then, 17), a first-year student at Municipal Technical College, was exposed at school in Shinonome-cho. Worried about his family at Nobori-cho, he set off for home, but was kept at bay by the flames. When he finally made it home the next day, all was ash. Mother Yoshino (then, 41) died at home, where she was exposed. Younger sister Sumiko (then, 15) and Michiko (then, 13), third-year and first-year students, respectively, at Hiroshima Jogakuin Girls High School, had both been exposed at their building demolition sites, and had disappeared. Later, Masaaki was reunited with father Masayoshi (then, 48), who had been exposed at Hiroshima Shipyard at Eba-machi. The two gathered Yoshino's bones, placed them in this teakettle, and carried them back. They never found the remains of the two sisters. |
