Description In May 1945, the family of Mieko Kubota (then, 12) moved from Kagoshima Prefecture to Saiki-gun, Hiroshima Prefecture. She asked if she could board at the home of the Emoto family in Teppo-cho so she could transfer to a girls school in Hiroshima City. She was preparing her luggage to move as August 6 approached. Two or three days later, Mieko still had not heard what had become of the Emoto family. When Mieko and family members entered the city on the 10th, it was a burnt plain—nothing remained of the Emoto home except the frame. With no clues as to what had happened to the family, they could only stare aghast at the ruins. They took this cast metal from the rubble and preserved it.
