The donor (then, 5) was pinned under the debris of her family’s destroyed house. She managed to get out of the debris together with her mother and older sister, but her younger sister, aged three, remained missing. However, they had no choice but to escape from the site with the fire approaching.
Their house burned to nothing. Four days after the bombing, her father came to their evacuation site in search of his family members. In his arms were her younger sister’s ashes and this vase, which had miraculously survived the fire.

Excerpt from a talk of the donor
“Both my older sister and I had sustained serious injuries. I still can’t forget how the burned asphalt felt extremely hot on the soles of my bare feet. Because it took a long time for the hair to grow around a cut on my head, I felt very embarrassed as a child.
I have valued this vase which had always been displayed in the alcove before the atomic bombing. It experienced the bombing in the same room where I was on that day.”
