Description | Darumadaishi statue as sister's keepsake Donated by Matsuko Uemae 500m from the hypocenter Tate-machi Several days after the bombing, the donor Matsuko (then, 15) set out to look for her older sister Shigeko Hayasaki (then, 18) with her eldest sister. However, there was no trace of the house in Tate-machi, and there was absolutely nothing left, not even rubble. The place looked like a desert. When the bomb struck, Shigeko would have been on her way to work. Her bones have not been recovered. Shigeko's stepparents who she lived with are also missing. This Darumadaishi statue used to be placed in an alcove in the Hayasaki family home. It was recovered from the desert-like burnt-out site, and became the only keepsake of Shigeko. |
