Description | Rooftiles, bottles, and eating utensils Donated by Yoko Kimura Iwao Kimura (then 39) found these items near the burnt remains of his parents’ house, which was 600 meters from the hypocenter. The body of his father, Eikichi (then 72), was found near their Buddhist alter. His body had mostly been burnt to its bones, with only the fleshy area around his belly band remaining. It was customary for his father to pray at their Buddhist alter every morning. His older sister-in-law, Setsuyo, was exposed to the bombing while doing laundry. She was able to escape, but died on August 15. Iwao was also exposed to the bombing while working at a building demolition work site. He suffered burns across his entire body, and hovered between life and death. |
