The safe stood on the underground level of Okaju Store in Sarugaku-cho. President Jujiro Okano's house was attached to the store. When their second daughter departed Hiroshima for her school evacuation, they moved to their other house in Itsukaichi-cho, Saeki-gun. Thus, all family members survived. The store, however, was completely destroyed, with some staff and customers. After the bombing, the question “Who died in your family?”was a regular greeting in Hiroshima. When so many had lost family members, Jujiro found it hard to respond, “Everyone in my family was spared.” |
