In his first year in the higher grades of First Elementary School, Setsuo Sakamura (then, 12) was exposed working as a mobilized student at the steel mill in Ozu-machi, 3,600 meters from the hypocenter. Though the steel mill partially collapsed, Setsuo was miraculously spared serious injury. Fleeing, he ran into his younger sisters Hiroko (then, 11) and Sachie (then, 2) in the Eastern Drill Ground and fled with them to a relative's home. However, Sachie, who appeared uninjured, suddenly fell ill. That night, she asked for water and died. Hiroko died the next day. |
