Katsuko Iwaoka (then, 4) was exposed at home at Kokutaiji-machi with her grandfather, Yonekichi and grandmother, Kiyo. The three were injured when the house fell on them. They somehow got free, but both grandparents died in mid-August. Katsuko's mother, Yoshie (then, 27), and little sister Shigeyo (then, 2) had evacuated to Kusatsu-minami in the western part of the city. However, Yoshie had entered the city that morning carrying Shigeyo on her back to join in building demolition work. The two were never found. |
