The five members of the Kumazawa family were exposed at home in Takajo-machi (now, Honkawa-cho 2-chome), about 550 meters from the hypocenter. The house collapsed, trapping beneath it Hoichi (father) and Sumako (oldest daughter, then, 13). When the fires came, Haruko (mother, then, 36) was unable to free the two. Haruko was forced to flee with her second daughter, Michiko (then, 10), and third daughter, Takako (then, 6). The three later learned that Hoichi and Sumako had somehow struggled clear of the house and had been taken in at an elementary school. She nursed them both desperately, but Hoichi died on the 13th and Sumako on the 14th. |
