Along with her husband Shunzo (then, 38) and her elder sister Mikio, Hiroko Azechi (then, 32), was exposed at home in Kako-machi (now, Sumiyoshi-cho), 1,300 meters from the hypocenter. They were trapped under the fallen building, but all three managed to work their way out. Shunzo, who lost a great deal of blood and some of his sight, repeatedly urged his wife to leave him and save herself. Hiroko, using every ounce of strength to carry Shunzo, managed to weave through the flames of the city to the Eba Branch of the Hiroshima First Army Hospital. |
