Flower vase
Donated by Hisayuki Fujioka
1,600m from the hypocenter Ote-machi 9-chome (now, Ote-machi 5-chome)
This flower vase was found in the burned out ruins of the donor’s home one month after the bombing. The donor’s father, Goichi; mother, Kiyo; older brother, Toshio; and younger brother, Toyokatsu, were all exposed to the atomic bomb, which caused the house to collapse straight down. Goichi, who was shielding Toyokatsu, was seriously injured.

Hisayuki (then, 12) was a first-year student at Koryo Junior High School who had been mobilized for building demolition and experienced the atomic bombing at his demolition site near Tsurumi Bridge (1,500m from the hypocenter).
From the account of the donor, Hisayuki, the third son of the Fujioka Family:
“There was a flash and then as soon as I thought my body was floating in space I was being smacked against the ground. Pain brought me around and I realized I was pinned under a collapsing house. When I tried to walk, the pain in my legs was awful and I collapsed. Despite this, I was determined to return home. I used some branches as crutches, and made my way home falling over many times along the way. When I finally arrived home, I found that it was on fire. Black rain fell, and from three days after the bombing I had diarrhea. Between September and December my hair fell out and purple spots formed on my skin. Although school restarted, I was unable to return and my worried father did his best to take care of me.”
