Description | People seeking water walked into the river and died. 1,500 m from the hypocenter, near Misasa Bridge August 6, 1945, morning Yoshio Hamada (26 at the time of the bombing, 57 when he drew this picture) Explanation in picture Seriously injured victims dragged themselves to the Otagawa River. With water flowing before their eyes, some lacked the strength to drink. Exhausted, they toppled down the stone steps and died. Burned and mangled people lay dead in the water. It was all too cruel. This horrible misery remains etched in my mind. I pray from my heart for the peaceful repose of the sacred souls sacrificed to the atomic bomb. |
