Explanation in picture
Of the students of Municipal Girls School, 277 first-year students and 264 second-year students assembled on the east side of Zaimoku-cho (Motoyasugawa River). On the west end (Ohtagawa River) were 308 first-year students in junior high school. Immediately after starting to tear down houses for their work service, they were all burned. Evidently, a huge number of them made their way to the river seeking water, and died there.
When I arrived on the morning of the 7th, I found a single junior high student alive. He was groaning, "I'm hot." I had no way to help him. I brought up an old mat from the riverside and covered him with it. In a faint voice he said, "Thank you." That final word of a 13-year-old still rings in my ears.
