Explanation in picture
On one side of the road, dozens of badly injured soldiers were laid out like drying sardines. With no treatment, no medicine, they lay under the mid-summer sun as if they were dead. Now and then one would jump up and stagger down to the river. Desperate for water, he would thrust his head in, then sink into the river and get swept away. This happened about once every thirty minutes.
