| Description | The open area where the Imperial Headquarters had stood Location: Moto-machi Distance from hypocenter: approx. 900m The staff of the Chugoku Regional Military Headquarters located in the central bailey (honmaru) conducted their morning assembly every Monday. On Monday August 6, mobilized students of Hijiyama Girls High School held their assembly before the military staff. Ninety girls were organized into three shifts for radio transmission duties. The moment the bomb dropped, the girls of the outgoing shift had completed their morning assembly and were out on the field along with the girls of the incoming shift. Sixty-four students and teachers of Hijiyama Girls High School and more than 700 staff members of the military headquarters died. |
