Description | Ruins of Imperial Headquarters Location: Moto-machi Distance from hypocenter: approx. 900m The entire grounds of Hiroshima Castle built by Mori Terumoto became an army base during the Meiji Period (1868-1912), when a succession of military and related facilities were built. In 1894, during the Sino-Japanese War, the Imperial Headquarters was built on the central bailey (honmaru). In 1926, the ruins were designated a national historical site. The atomic bomb smashed the Imperial Headquarters. All that remains now are the foundation and (on the right in the photo) the stone posts bordering the turnaround drive. |
