Description | Miyoko Matsumoto (then, 14), a student of Hiroshima Jogakuin Girls High School, was exposed to the bomb at her building demolition work site. Her mother, Masa (then, 45), desperately searched for her, but could not even find her ashes. Excerpt from the memoirs of Miyoko's elder sister Sachiko: "Worrying about her daughter Miyoko, who didn't return on August 6, my mother wept in secret every night and searched for Miyoko in the burned-out ruins every day, not knowing about residual radiation. On August 6, 1946, one year later, she again went to Zakoba-cho to search for Miyoko, and pulled Miyoko's monpe trousers out of the scorched soil. It was a miracle. Wrapping the monpe trousers, which had been covered with soil, in newspapers, my mother held them and wept every night while she was sleeping." |
