Description | Jacket worn at the time of the bombing Donated by Norikazu Shigeto Dr. Fumio Shigeto (then 42), deputy director of Hiroshima Red Cross Hospital, was wearing this jacket at the time of the bombing. Dr. Shigeto was exposed to the bombing at Hiroshima Station, waiting for the streetcar to go to work. He immediately fell to the ground. He was injured by roof tiles and other objects falling on his back, but was miraculously saved; he happened to be at a shadowed area of a building nearby. Many of the other people who were waiting for the streetcar died instantly. Some others who barely survived had all of their clothes burned off. Later, Dr. Shigeto became the director of the Atomic-bomb Survivors Hospital, and devoted himself to the medical treatment of atomic bomb survivors for the rest of his life, such as discovering the high incidence of leukemia. |
