Description | Gym uniform with stains from black rain Donated by Toyoko Matsumiya Approx. 1,350m from the hypocenter Higashi-kan-on-machi 2-chome (now, Higashi-kan-on-machi) Toyoko Kubota (then, 16) was a student at Nishi Girls High School, who experienced the bombing from the second floor of her school building. The windows along the road flashed brightly and just as she turned her face away, the school building shook violently. When she regained consciousness, she was pinned beneath the ceiling, but she managed to free herself and flee to the athletic field. After some time, columns of fire arose from the building and although she could hear the students trapped under it crying for their teachers to help, there was nothing she could do. She spent that night at an emergency relief station, dazed and surrounded by the dead and dying speaking their final words. This is the shirt she was wearing at the time of the bombing, stained by the black rain which fell while she was fleeing for refuge. |
