Description Masami Sumida (then 14) was a second year student at First Okayama Prefectural Junior High School. On an errand for his school, he was exposed to the A-bomb in a streetcar that had just stopped in front of Hiroshima Station. He sustained a severe injury to the back and right side of his head and, on the verge of losing consciousness, was aided by three friends, who fled together to Toshogu Shrine. On August 8, he returned to Okayama where he received treatment. He hovered for a time between life and death, but his life was spared. This is the uniform jacket he was wearing that day.
