Description | Strip of cloth from a student’s uniform Donated by Tamotsu Kono This strip of cloth was part of the school uniform worn by Takeo Kono (then, 14), who was in Class 6 of the seventh grade. The day after the atomic bombing, his older brother Junichi discovered Takeo’s body on the riverbank near Shin-ohashi Bridge, roughly 620 meters from the hypocenter. According to Takao’s father, Tamotsu, “The blast evidently flung Takao into the Honkawa River. Though severely injured, he was a strong swimmer and managed to crawl up on the riverbank. He had evidently drunk river water, because his stomach was bloated and water pouring from his nose had moistened the area around him.” Before cremating him on the spot, they removed what they could from the body, and those items became their only keepsakes. |
