Soon after Rikuo clawed his way out from under his collapsed house it caught fire. He was able to rescue only one thing, his father's briefcase. This bullet-proof vest was in that suitcase. It was a gift from Kan's students, who sewed lucky 5-sen pieces onto it and gave it to him when he went to the front. (5 sen is one more than 4 sen, which is pronounced “shisen,” which is a homonym for "line of death." Thus, 5-sen means "beyond the line of death.") Rikuo walked around for days searching for Kan's body, but never found a trace. This was his only memento of his father.
