Description | The donor's father, Morito Watarai (then, 63), and mother, Toku, were exposed to the bomb at home. Toku managed to escape from her collapsed home despite being severely injured. Morito was never found. Immediately after the A-bombing, their home was engulfed by fire. These tea saucers were found in the ruins by their daughter Sumie (then, 18) several days after the bombing. Morito, an antique collector, had soaked the saucers in water in a basin to avoid damage in case of an air raid. The silver tea saucers were completely blackened and deformed. Sumie treasured these tea saucers as the only personal effects left by Morito. |
