That day, Takuji’s mother, Sadako (then 45), was in the house with her older daughter Hiroko (then 28), who had brought her two children to visit their grandparents. When the bomb exploded, Sadako was sleeping next to her three-year-old grandchild. They were trapped under the collapsed house, but were both saved. Hiroko grabbed her one-year-old son and dashed out of the house screaming, “Mother, look out!” The two were blown away by the blast. The family never knew what became of them or of Yoshitaro, who was outside when the bomb fell. |
