Donated by Teruyo Toma
In May of 1945, Mr. Kanji Toma (then, 33), a newspaperman of Godo Shimbun at the time, began to live alone away from his wife Yukiko (then, 28) and their four young daughters, to work at the newspaper company’s branch in Hiroshima. In June, their fifth girl was born.
On August 6th, Kanji was exposed to the A-bombing when he was on the second floor of his lodging at Shimo-nagarekawa-cho (approx.950m from the hypocenter). The building collapsed instantly, causing him to suffer severe injuries. After extracting himself from the debris, he continued to walk to Tsuyama City in Okayama Prefecture, where his wife and daughters were waiting for him. However, his strength gave out on his way home, and he was carried to an aid station. At the facility, he informed the staff of his name and address, which enabled his family to discover his whereabouts. On around August 18th, his relatives headed to the aid station. They walked around in the facility filled with dead bodies and severely injured people, shouting “Kan-chan (Kanji)! Are you here?” Kanji raised his hand, saying “I am here! Brother!” When his elder brother tried to help him sit up, he found that his back was infested with maggots. While bringing Kanji home in a packed train, his brother protected him from the crowd with great difficulty. Yukiko and some other people did their best to nurse him, but he had maggots over his entire body, and there was nothing that could be done for him. On August 24, Kanji called Yukiko to his bedside and said something like: “I’m not the only one who has been forced by this war to suffer and die in this way. Don’t be sad. Be strong. Please make our daughters happy.” This was the last message that he left before dying.
